Canal celebration is Saturday

September 16, 2004

To celebrate National Public Lands Day on Saturday, the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park will waive the entrance fee at the Great Falls Tavern area in Potomac, Md. In addition, one-hour mule-drawn canal boat rides in Georgetown will be free Saturday.

During the trip, park rangers and volunteers in period clothing will describe the history of the canal and the lives of the families who worked on it. Rides are available at 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Those interested may call the Georgetown Visitor Center at 202-653-5190 to confirm times for boat rides because schedules are subject to change. Reservations are required for groups of 10 or more.

A walking tour, "A Very Retail Georgetown," will be led by a park ranger from 12:15 to 1:45 p.m.

The Georgetown Visitor Center, at 1057 Thomas Jefferson St., N.W., is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays.
