Sharpsburg mayor to run again

September 14, 2004|by JULIE E. GREENE

SHARPSBURG - Sharpsburg Mayor Hal Spielman said Monday night that he plans to run for re-election to the mayoral post.

The town hasn't had a mayor be elected and serve a full term in about a decade. Spielman was promoted from vice mayor to mayor in early 2003 after the previous mayor, Sidney Gale, resigned, saying he didn't think he had enough time to do the best job for the town.

Spielman has more time to handle town business now that he's retired after 32 years of teaching, he said after Monday night's mayor and council meeting.

Town Clerk Anna Jamison said Councilman Jeffery Saylor was the only candidate who had filed for office as of Monday night's meeting.

Saylor filed to retain the council seat to which he was appointed after Ralph Hammond was promoted from council member to vice mayor following Spielman's promotion.

Councilman J.W. Eichelberger said Monday night he had not decided whether to run for re-election.

The deadline for candidates to file is Oct. 12.
