The Washington County Board of Education has hired John Martirano, the assistant county attorney for Washington County since 1999, as its new human resources director.

The personnel change was approved and announced during Tuesday's school board meeting

Martirano, 38, of Smithsburg, will fill a vacancy left when Donald Francis, 47, resigned in June after three years with the school system.

Reached by phone, Martirano said he has enjoyed working for the county but was ready for a change. The new job pays more than his current job, he said.

Martirano is scheduled to start later this month, Schools Superintendent Elizabeth Morgan said during Tuesday's meeting.

"We are just so fortunate to get him as our human resources director. We look forward to him having a real impact on the school system," Morgan said.

Martirano has experience in the public and private sectors, and has done some peripheral work in the area of human resources, Morgan said.

County Attorney Richard Douglas said Tuesday that he plans to ask the Washington County Commissioners to hire a replacement for Martirano.

"I am really sorry to see him go," Douglas said.

Martirano and Douglas were not at Tuesday's board meeting.
