HCC wins tourney title

COLUMBIA, Md. - Megan Miller was named most valuable player on Saturday as the Hagerstown Community College volleyball team swept through four matches to win the championship of the Dragon Invitational at Howard Community College.

Miller recorded 51 kills and 50 digs in the tournament, which ended with HCC sweeping a pair of final matches against the College of Southern Maryland in the double-elimination format.

The Hawks won the semifinal 30-21, 28-30, 15-13 before winning the title with a 30-27, 30-24 sweep in the finals. HCC also defeated Pitt (30-28, 30-25) and Howard (30-22, 30-23) on the way to the finals.

Keri Jackson was named to the all-tournament team with 41 kills, 29 digs and five aces. Staci Grabill had 108 assists while Savanah Wetzel had seven aces and 96 digs.



Shepherd 3, Mars Hill 1

MARS HILL, N.C. - Richard Smith and Jamie Richie scored while Shepherd University shut out Mars Hill in the second half Sunday for a victory.

Alie Basma, of Frederick, Md., scored Shepherd's first goal as the Rams (2-0-1) played to a 1-1 tie at the half.

Mikus Rubenis had an assist while Robert Pence made eight saves.

Ritchie wins WVC honor

Shepherd University's Jamie Ritchie, who scored two goals and added an assist as the Rams jumped out to a 2-0-1 start, was named WVC men's soccer player of the week.

The junior scored Shepherd's only goal in a 1-1 tie against Columbia Union. He paced the Rams to weekend wins at Presbyterian and Mars Hill with a goal and an assist.


Wilkinson wins weekly award

Shepherd senior forward Erin Wilkinson scored the eventual game-winning goal to lead the Rams to a win over Bridgewater and win the first WVC player of the week honor for the season.
