A forum on issues of the day

September 07, 2004

Six well-known leaders of the Washington County community will meet on Wednesday to discuss some of the most difficult issues of our time at the Contemporary Issues Forum at Hagerstown Business College.

Considering the lineup, it should be a memorable evening. It includes Dr. Bibhas Bandy, a local physician; the Rev. John DiBacco, a Catholic priest; the Rev. Leroy Jackson, pastor of Ebenezer AME Church in Hagerstown; Rabbi Fred Raskind, of the B'nai Abraham congregation; Dr. Shahab Siddiqui, a local physician and the Rev. Don Stevenson, pastor of Christ's Reformed Church in Hagerstown.

The six will be asked a number of questions about religion and its role in society, as well as other inquires on topics ranging from the legalization of marijuana to the positive or negative effects of the World Bank.

Such forums are important because they expose citizens - and students - to different perspectives on important issues of the day. Gatherings such as this also serve to break down barriers between those of different faiths and nationalities.
