WALKERSVILLE, Md. - South Hagerstown held No. 4 Walkersville to minus-13 yards of net offense and did not allow a first down as the Rebels blanked the Lions 15-0 Friday in the season opener for both teams.

South (1-0) set the tone early, driving 69 yards on its first possession, capped by a 24-yard touchdown by first-year quarterback Mark Bryan.

Bryan later connected with Ronnie Jackson for a 32-yard touchdown pass midway through the third quarter. Jackson caught all four pass attempts by Bryan for 73 yards.

Jimbo Harmon and Terrell Blair each rushed for 50 yards in the win.

No. 1 Martinsburg 28 Riverside 21

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Nate Sowers rushed for touchdowns of 32 and 80 yards to help Martinsburg build a 28-6 first half lead and the Bulldogs hung on to defeat Riverside.


After Riverside scored first for a 6-0 lead, Sean Dozier returned the ensuing kickoff 81 yards for a touchdown. Josh Twyman added a 30-yard touchdown run for the Bulldogs (2-0).

Riverside (1-1) scored two touchdowns in the third quarter, but fell short.

No. 2 Frederick 34 No. 5 Middletown 6

FREDERICK, Md. - Cory Rhodes and Bruce Dorsey put on offensive shows as Frederick beat Middletown in the season opener for each team.

Rhodes was 9 of 14 passing for 280 yards, including touchdown passes of 82 and 30 yards to Brian Lanning. Rhodes also rushed for 123 yards.

Dorsey rushed for 152 yards on 18 carries, including TD runs of 2, 20 and 30 yards.

Frederick, which led 14-6 at halftime, had 583 yards of total offense.

Jefferson 19, Sherando 13

STEPHENS CITY, Va. - Patrick Burns threw a pair of touchdown passes in the fourth quarter as Jefferson overcame a 13-6 deficit to end an 18-game losing streak.

Burns connected to Josh Brown for an 81-yard score and Will Grantham for a 32-yard score.

Jefferson (1-1) went up 6-0 in the first quarter on a 45-yard TD run by Grantham, who ran for 121 yards on 23 carries.

Jefferson's Steve Cameron recovered a Sherando fumble on the Cougars' 30-yard line with 1:05 left to play to seal the game.

Hancock 35, Model School 0

HANCOCK - Ryan Joy rushed for 83 yards and two touchdowns and kicked three extra points as Hancock blanked Model School.

The Panthers (1-0) rolled up 339 rushing yards, led by Derrick Clingerman (123 yards, TD) and Josh Ruppenthal (112, TD). Jeff Willison caught a 35-yard touchdown from backup quarterback Kenny Clark.

Ruppenthal led the defense with 10 tackles, while Clark intercepted two passes and Joel Barnhard recoved two fumbles.

Catoctin 8, Century 6

SYKESVILLE, Md. - Wyatt Basley scored the game-tying five-yard touchdown run and added the game-winning two-point conversion run in the third quarter and Catoctin edged Century.

Basley finished with 75 of the Catoctin's 210 rushing yards. Mike Lovejoy added 113 yards on 15 carries for the Cougars (1-0).

Frankfort 35, Hedgesville 21

FRANKFORT, W.Va. - Travis Morelend rushed for a school-record 319 yards - including a 76-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter - and Frankfort beat Hedgesville.

Nathan Metz added 116 yards for the Falcons (2-0) and had four touchdown runs (3, 4, 7, 15).

Hedgesville (0-2) grabbed an early 9-0 lead on a 37-yard field goal by Eli Griffin and an 82-yard punt return for a touchdown by Mike Manspile, but Frankfort responded with 29 straight points.

Michael Lopez found Michael Bowers for a 31-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter for Hedgesville.

James Buchanan 3, Fairfield 0

FAIRFIELD, Pa. - Ashleigh Helfrick had 14 digs and 8 kills and Erica Helfrick had 27 assists to lead James Buchanan to a season-opening sweep of Fairfield, 25-10, 25-7, 25-8.

Tiff Hunsberger had 17 service points - including five aces - and Jess Snyder added eight kills for the Rockets (1-0).

Williamsport 3, TJ 1

FREDERICK, Md. - Sami Snodderly had 15 kills to lead Williamsport to a 25-17, 24-26, 25-13, 25-19 win over Thomas Johnson in the season opener for each team.

Lea Drury had 20 assists and three aces for the Wildcats, while Lacie Johnson had six kills and four aces and Emily Malott had five kills and four blocks.

Bethany Springer had seven kills, five blocks, eight service points and six digs for TJ, while Jami Murray had five kills and six blocks and Nicole Pagano had 10 assists and six service points.

Greencastle 3 McConnellsburg 1

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Mandi Mentzer had 20 service points and 27 digs and Michelle Negley added 28 digs to lead Greencastle past McConnellsburg, 25-15, 25-17, 20-25, 25-18.

Jessica Ritchey had 17 assists and 16 digs, Whitney Myers had 10 kills and 20 digs and Melanie Fries had 13 digs for the Blue Devils (1-0). Jade Dunhour had 11 service points, 22 assists and 13 digs in the win.

Southern Fulton 3, Hancock 0

WARFORDSBURG, Pa. - Candace Bard had 12 service points and five blocks as Southern Fulton opened the season with a sweep of Hancock, 25-14, 25-15, 25-13.
