Mail Call

September 04, 2004

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"I am calling in reference to the person looking for the solar cross that they saw at Rose Hill Cemetery. If you have a plot at Rose Hill, you can get them from Bill Divelbliss there at the office. If you don't have a plot there, you can get one from Startzman's Hardware on South Potomac Street."

"About the two little houses being built in the alley in Boonsboro. It's not the idea of what the house is, it is where they put it. If they would have put them somewhere else, it would have been fine."

"I just read in Mail Call where someone said that the only ones who wants the hospital to move to Robinwood are all doctors, lawyers and high-class well to do people who live in that area. This is not true. I live west of Hagerstown and I volunteer at the information desk and I want you to know that none of these people walk to the hospital, they take a cab, they ask to call a cab for them. Why is all this hoop la about moving? You would have more parking spaces, you wouldn't have a hill and you wouldn't have the steps to climb."

"I read in the paper the other day about a grocery store and other things coming to Boonsboro. I think what Boonsboro needs is a youth center where young people can go to congregate."

"Here we go with another year of the school board dancing around the problems at Bester Elementary. It's worse than what it was before, still no answer from the board as to when they are going to do something."

"It amazes me that Smithsburg EMS can make a public apology in late August for an incident that happened in mid- March. Where was the apology then? I think the only reason they did it now is because it became public knowledge and they felt they had to."

"In reference to Mr. Munson wanting to put the NASCAR track in Washington County. If he wants to put one in Washington County, let him buy the land, let him pay the taxes."

"I want to respond to the person who was talking about John Kerry and his Purple Hearts. He said that he was wounded several times and survived and they go on to say that they can't believe that they would hand out Purple Hearts for no reason. He was wounded several times, never hospitalized and I just can't believe that they would give Purple Hearts either for a wound that only needed a bandage."

"To the person who told everyone to check out the article in the New York Times about Iraq, they said it's the truth about Iraq. I am sorry, but if you think you are going to get the truth about Iraq out of the New York Times, trust me, that is not the place to go for accuracy."

"Can anyone tell me if there is a Republican headquarters in Hagerstown where you can get bumper stickers and yard signs and so forth?"

"To all the people who think they know everything about Kerry and Bush. You don't know the truth about either one of them. So keep your nose out of it and mind your own business."

"Could you please put the recipe for seafoam candy back in the paper? I missed it the first time."

"This is to thank the man who answered my 911 call last Sunday. Having previously suffered a stroke, my condition was alarming and thanks to their help, made it possible for me to resolve my condition."

"Make sure you take the time to go out and vote this year. This is an important election this year. Don't vote as a Democrat or a Republican, vote as an American citizen. Vote for the person who you think will do the best for this country. We have seen Bush for four years, now let's see four years of John Kerry. It can't be worse. No more wars!"

"When is the Williamsport High School Class of 1979 is having their class reunion?"

"To Washington County Commissioner Munson: We need a NASCAR track in Hagerstown like a hole in the head."

"I found it interesting that someone thought the county government should take over watching the ambulance and fire company squads throughout the county. They can't even watch themselves and keep control of what is going on in the government that they are supposed to be handling. So how in the world could they possibly watch those companies throughout the county? First of all, the Smithsburg incident doesn't put a black eye on the rest of the county volunteer fire and ambulance companies. I think it's a shame that anyone would even think that. What took place there was an incident that took place there, not anywhere else in the county."

"All the readers should enlighten themselves by reading Charley Reese's column in Sept. 1 paper. It's very interesting. You may be surprised in what you might learn."
