Sept. 11 events planned in city, at Valley Mall

The Hagerstown/ Washington County community will come together Sept. 11 to honor those fallen in service to their country and to prepare residents for the possibility of future emergencies.

A series of events, sponsored by the Washington County Commissioners, Hagerstown's mayor and City Council, the county's delegation to the Maryland General Assembly, Valley Mall, Washington County Citizens Corps and Partners in Preparedness, will take place at Hagerstown City Park and Valley Mall on Halfway Boulevard.

Daylong events will begin at 9 a.m. in City Park with a tree-planting ceremony. Four trees will be planted to memorialize career firefighters, law enforcement, volunteer firefighters and emergency medical services and active military.

During the ceremony, a moment of silence will be observed for those who lost their lives in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, as well as for members of the military who have served or are serving in the Iraqi war.

Following the ceremony, a procession from City Park to Valley Mall will take place. Each fire, emergency medical and law enforcement company is invited to have one marked unit from its company participate.

Events will continue at 10 a.m. at Valley Mall on Halfway Boulevard, with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Remembrance Wall at Center Mall.

Throughout the mall, local support agencies utilized during an emergency or declared disaster will provide emergency preparedness material for residents.
