Hospice volunteers

Hospice of Washington County Inc. will hold a fall volunteer training program for individuals wanting to work with patients and their families. The four-week program begins Tuesday, Sept. 14, and will continue Tuesdays and Thursdays through Tuesday, Oct. 12. Morning and evening sessions are available.

The training program is designed to provide an understanding of the phases a patient with a terminal illness might go through. Members of the class will learn the many aspects of Hospice family roles, the aging process, medical aspects of care, grief and bereavement, listening and communication skills. The information is presented through lecturers, videos and group discussions.

YMCA fall programs

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Waynesboro YMCA will start registration for the following adult programs:


· City League basketball registration will be from Wednesday, Sept. 1, to Friday, Oct. 15. The league runs from November through March, and games are played Monday and Wednesday evenings. The league operates on a draft system to ensure fair and competitive teams.

· The adult volleyball registration deadline is Friday, Sept. 17. Bring your own coed team and sign up for A- or B-level play. Games are played Tuesday and Thursday evenings from October through March. There's a regular season round robin and playoff tournament.

· Entry deadline for the fall racquetball league is Saturday, Sept. 18. Recreational and competitive leagues with divisions for open, advanced, intermediate and novice players. YMCA staff pairs up matches, and players arrange a convenient time to play prior to the deadline. The league will run from September through November.

· Tae kwon do is offered for both adults and youth. Classes start Monday, Sept. 13, and will be offered through May. Adults meet Mondays and Wednesdays while youth meet Wednesdays.

Nutrition workshop

Washington County Health Department will offer "No More Battles, Better Eating" from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, at the health department, 1302 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, second floor auditorium.

Tammy Thornton, a registered dietitian at Washington County Health Department, will lead the workshop.

Workshop topics include: feeding the picky eater; the parent/caregiver's responsibility and the child's responsibility for eating; eating fruit instead of juice; rewarding with food; TV and limits; proper weight for children; and foods for optimal growth, energy and academics.
