Captains score five in 9th to beat Suns

August 27, 2004

After rallying from two runs down to tie the game in the eighth inning, Hagerstown watched one get away as Lake County scored five runs in the ninth Thursday for a 7-2 victory which was much closer than the final score.

Suns reliever Brian Wilson (2-5) hit No. 9 hitter Chris Clem with a pitch to start the ninth. Juan Valdes singled, and after a scarifice bunt, Ryan Goleski was intentionally walked.

Matt Whitney fouled off four two-strike pitches before drawing a walk from Wilson, scoring the winning run.

After the second out, Mike Conroy blasted a triple over centerfielder Jesse Schmidt's head for a bases-clearing triple and a 6-2 lead. Ryan Mulhern's single scored Conroy.

Lake County took a 2-0 lead in the fourth on a sacrifice fly and a bases-loaded walk.

Mike Wagner doubled and scored on a throwing error in the sixth for Hagerstown's first run.

Kyle Bone's single down the right-field line in the eighth scored Pat Dobson - who earlier doubled - with the tying run.
