MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A 10-year-old Martinsburg girl who was struck by a truck while trying to cross W.Va. 9 near the General Motors access road Aug. 13 has died, West Virginia State Police said.

Bethany Pittington died at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., last Friday, said Trooper Z.L. Nine.

Bethany and her brother were crossing W.Va. 9 from a ROCS gas station when she was struck by a pickup truck, Nine said.

The driver of the truck was not charged, Nine said.

Bethany was preparing to enter the fifth grade at Potomack Intermediate School, said her father, George "Kerry" Pittington.

In July, Bethany attended Bible school at New Life Community Church, based in Bunker Hill, her father said. The "most astonishing thing" regarding Pittington is that she gave her life to Jesus Christ before the accident, George Pittington said.

Bethany said he remembers his daughter giving her only Bible away to a friend.

"It was the most exciting thing in her life," Pittington said, referring to his daughter's faith.

The Pittington family lives not far off W.Va. 9 west of the ROCS store, and the girl had been to the ROCS store before, her father said.
