Joseph F. LaFata, 86

YUMA, Ariz. - Joseph F. LaFata, 86, of Yuma, and formerly of Hagerstown, Md., beloved husband of 61 years to Lurley Kiser LaFata, "WENT HOME" to his Heavenly Father on Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, after a long battle with cancer.

He was born in Carini, Sicily, on Oct. 28, 1917, and came to the United States at the age of 7 with his other siblings and mother to join his father, who had previously gone to New York, settling in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Joseph graduated from Manhattan High of Aviation in New York, and the Henson Flying School in Hagerstown with honors. He was employed by Fairchild Aircraft prior to flight school.


He went on to Atlanta, Ga., as a flight instructor, then on to Marietta, Ga., as a test pilot on the B-29 airplane, later returning to Hagerstown after his love of flying. That led him to various positions and eventually to Yuma Proving Ground for many years, until he retired in 1986.

Joseph was an active member of the Knights of Columbus for more than 50 years having served as Faithful Navigator and Grand Knight.

Mr. LaFata was a devout Catholic and faithful member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, having served on the Parish Council and in various ministries. He was installed as a Permanent Acolyte by Bishop Green in 1976.

In addition to his wife, Lurley, Joseph is survived by his daughter Teresa Rhodes of Yuma; sons, Salvatore Joseph LaFata of Green Valley, Ariz., and Jan Anthony LaFata of Tucson, Ariz.; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Rose Ruisi of Toms River, N.J.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Salvatore and Josephine; four brothers; and two sisters.

A requiem Mass was held Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Yuma.

Arrangements are by Johnson Mortuary, Yuma.

Bryce G. Sleichter, 5 months

FEB. 26, 2004-AUG. 19, 2004

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Bryce G. Sleichter, 5 months, son of Angela Krause Sleichter and Richard Benjamin Sleichter of Chambersburg, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, at Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pa.

He was born Feb. 26, 2004, in Hershey.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by grandparents, Richard S. and Janice Sleichter of Chambersburg, and James and Bonnie Krause of Conestoga, Pa.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg. The Rev. Lester Stine will officiate. Burial will follow in Norland Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Larry M. Hettenhouser, 57

Larry Martin Hettenhouser, 57, of 14023 Sweet Vale Drive in Hagerstown, died Friday, Aug. 20, 2004, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Dec. 4, 1946, in Martinsburg, W.Va., he was the son of the late Jerry L. and Leona Yost Hettenhouser.

He was employed by Sharrett Inc.

He was a member of National Moose and Morris Frock American Legion Post 42.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Hettenhouser; one daughter, Melanie Davis of Hagerstown; two sons, Jason Hettenhouser of Greencastle, Pa., and Mark Cozzoli of Hagerstown; and six grandchildren.

Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, East Wilson Boulevard, Hagerstown. The Rev. John Yost will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Irene H. Sigler, 74

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Irene House Sigler, 74, of Middletown, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, at Frederick (Md.) Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 9, 1929, in Petersville, Md., she was the daughter of the late Lee A. House and Velma Guyton House.

She retired from Long's Appliances in Middletown.

She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Jefferson, Md., where she was active in the women's E.L.C.A., sang in the choir, taught Sunday school and was the director of the Easter pageants. She also bowled in the church league.

She was a member of Jefferson Grange and formerly served as secretary-treasurer of the Maryland Brown Swiss Breeders Association.

She is survived by her husband, Robert A. Sigler; one daughter, Cynthia Sigler of Point of Rocks, Md.; one son, Robert A. Sigler Jr. of Wolfsville, Md.; one brother, Arthur L. House of Jefferson; and two grandchildren.

Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Jefferson. The Revs. Andrea Ernest and Melvina Stricklin will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, Middletown.
