Softball tryouts


The PA Xplosion girls 18U softball team is having tryouts for its Fall and Summer 2005 tournament team. Tryouts are held weekly. Girls ages 14-18 are eligible. Contact Dave Funk at 717-352-3403 for tryout times and locations.




The Tri-State Thunder girls fast-pitch softball organization is having tryouts for its 14U, 16U and 18U teams Aug. 15, 19 and 22 at 5:30 p.m. at the Pinesburg Softball Complex. The organization is looking for talented, dedicated athletes who are looking to advance their softball skills and compete at the highest levels. The Frederick Heartbreakers, a high-level travel fast-pitch softball organization, will hold tryouts for five age groups at Anders Field in Libertytown, Md. The 14U and 18U teams will have tryouts Aug. 21 and 28 from 9 a.m.-noon (14U) and 1-4 p.m. (18U). The 10U, 12U and 16U teams will have tryouts Aug. 22 and 29 from 9 a.m.-noon (10U, 12U) and 1-4 (16U). The PA Blitz girls fast-pitch softball teams will have tryouts for the 2005 tournament season Aug. 18, 19, 21, 22, 28, 29 and Sept. 4-5. Sports For Kids

Registration is open for the Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks & Recreation 2004 Sports For Kids program for children ages 4 and 5. Classes will be held on Wednesday afternoons at the Berkeley 2000 Recreation Center. For more information, call the M-BC Parks & Recreation office at 304-264-4842.

Youth flag football

Registration is open for CSL Flag Football. The program is open to boys ages 10-14 and offers instruction from knowledgable coaches and a seven-week competition schedule. Games and practices are held at Old Forge Elementary School. Registration fee is $40 per player, which includes uniforms and equipment. For more information, contact Greg Slick at 301-824-3659.




The Waynesboro YMCA will hold a seven-week flag football program beginning Sept. 11 for boys and girls from age 6 through eighth grade. Sessions are age-grouped and one hour long on Saturday mornings. A clinic will be held in early September for prospective coaches. For more information, contact Lindsey Secrest at 717-762-6012.

Flag football league

The Washington County Flag Football League, the oldest organized 9-man league in Maryland, is looking for teams and players for the 2004 season. All games are played on Saturdays at Marty Snook Park in Halfway. For more information, contact G.E. Ingram at 301-432-0056.

3-on-3 basketball

The Newville (Pa.) Area Community Center will sponsor a 3-on-3 basketball tournament Aug. 21 at Newville Community Park. Each team is allowed five people on its roster and PIAA officials will be used. Age groups range from 10-and-under boys and girls divisions to over-30 recreational men's division. Newville 5K race

The fourth annual Newville (Pa.) Area Community Center 5K race will be held Aug. 21 at 8:30 a.m. Entry fee before Aug. 11 is $6, or $12 with a race T-shirt. After Aug. 11, entry fees are $9 and $15. Team divisions will be added for this year's race and trophies for the top male and female finishers in each division will be awarded. Volleyball tournament

The Newville (Pa.) Area Community Center will sponsor a 4-on-4 co-ed volleyball tournament Aug. 21 at the Newville Community Park. The tournament is limited to 16 teams.
