Lillian M. Smith, 79


APRIL 6, 1925-AUG. 12, 2004

Lillian Marie Smith, 79, of 12728 Little Antietam Road, Hagerstown, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, at her home.

Born April 6, 1925, in Chewsville, she was the daughter of the late George B. and Beulah Swope Bachtell.

She was a 1943 graduate of Hagerstown High School.

She was employed by Pangborn Corp.

She was a member of St. Peters (Beards) Lutheran Church.

She was a member of Leitersburg Grange.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Verdean C. Smith; one daughter, Susan M. Harbaugh of Hagerstown; and two brothers, George A. Bachtell and Kenneth C. Bachtell, both of Hagerstown.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Wilbur Bachtell.

Graveside services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park in Hagerstown. The Rev. Carroll L. Boyer will officiate.

There will be no viewing.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Peters (Beards) Lutheran Church, Old Forge Road, Leitersburg, MD 21742.

Francis X. Murray II, 60


JAN. 28, 1944-AUG. 11, 2004

Francis Xavier Murray II, 60, of 518 E. Franklin St., Hagerstown, Md., passed away Aug. 11, 2004, at his home after a long battle with multiple sclerosis.

Born Jan. 28, 1944, in Montclair, N.J., he was the son of Jane R. Murray of Jacksonville, Fla., and the late Francis Xavier Murray Sr.

He retired from AT&T Communications in 1990. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church and the First Hose Fire Co.

He was a lifetime member of Community Rescue Service Inc., dedicating more than 30 years of volunteer service, during which he was an advisor for the International Junior Competition Teams and a member of the Adult International Competition Team. He also was a heavy rescue and light rescue instructor, EMT and one of the first CRTs in Maryland. During his many years of service, he also obtained the ranks of L.T., training officer and held the office of chief from 1980 to 1990. He also was instrumental in establishing the Smithsburg Ambulance Co. and the Maugansville Substation.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 38 years, Noelle L. Murray; one daughter, Jennifer L. Jones of Hagerstown; three sisters, Jane Murray of Florida, Mary Bodniowycz of Florida and Patricia Smith of Pennsylvania; one brother, David Murray of Florida; six grandchildren, Bradley, Matthew and Grace Jones and Danial, Kalynn Noelle and Mikaylah Murray, all of Hagerstown; and long-term care provider, Debbie Kegarise of Hagerstown. He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Murray.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, at 11 a.m. at St. Ann Catholic Church, 1525 Oak Hill Ave., Hagerstown, with Father Richard J. Murphy as celebrant.

Interment will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.

Family will receive friends Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown.




Lena V. Renner, 82


NOV. 9, 1921-AUG. 12, 2004

BOONSBORO - Lena Viola Babington Renner, 82, of 21244 Boonsboro Mountain Road, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, at her home.

Born Nov. 9, 1921, in Boonsboro, she was the daughter of the late William McKinley and Vada Mae Poffenberger Babington.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Leroy Renner Jr., in 1973.

She retired from the Washington County Board of Education, having worked at Rohrersville School.

She was a member of Boonsboro Bible Church.

She was a member of United Auto Workers Region 8 and Washington County Retired Education Personnel Association.

She is survived by one sister, Vivian M. Harrison of Boonsboro, one niece and one nephew.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Bast Funeral Home in Boonsboro. The Rev. Joseph Downs will officiate. Burial will be in Boonsboro Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Myrle G. Hovis, 82


NOV. 21, 1921-AUG. 12, 2004

Myrle Gordon Hovis, 82, formerly of 17962 Oak Ridge Apartments, Hagerstown, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, at Homewood Nursing Home in Williamsport.

Born Nov. 21, 1921, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Myrle and Hazel Bender Hovis.

He retired from Fairchild Industries.

He was a former member of Christ Fellowship Assembly of God.

He is survived by two nephews.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, East Wilson Boulevard, Hagerstown. Pastor Justin Repp will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
