GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Firefighters from seven area companies responded to 9601 Long Lane Friday evening to battle a fire that destroyed a 1 1/2-story frame shed.

There was no damage estimate and the cause of the fire is under investigation, said Robert Ebersole, chief of Rescue Hose Co. No. 1 in Greencastle.

The state fire marshal will investigate today, Ebersole said.

The building was owned by Eddwin Norris. Norris said his grandson, Isaac Lauffer, 10, discovered the fire.

Norris also said that people driving by his property at the time stopped and helped him pull some equipment and tools out before the flames could destroy them.

"They really helped me," he said.

Firefighters had to set up a tanker shuttle system to a hydrant in Greencastle, about four miles away, to get water to the scene, Ebersole said.

The vinyl siding on a nearby garage was melted by the heat.

Units from Waynesboro, Mercersburg, New Franklin and Marion in Franklin County responded, as well as crews from Long Meadow and Maugansville, Ebersole said.
