Area roundup - DeShong picks up Juniors win

Darryn DeShong picked up a victory in the Tri-State Junior Golf Association tournament at Beaver Creek Golf Course on Monday.

DeShong won the 16-18 division with a 3-over-par 75, two strokes ahead of Kevin Reiber and Clayton Rotz.

Steven Hutzell shot a 78 to win the 14-15 division and Alex Hoffman was first in the 12-13 division with a 78. Kacy Straub's 87 led the girls.

The Tri-State Juniors conclude the year Aug. 16 with the championships at Black Rock.


Funkstown ousted

FREDERICK, Md. - Salisbury strung together five straight hits to build a four-run sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie en route to a 7-4 victory to eliminate Funkstown from the Maryland State American Legion tournament at McCurdy Field.

Salisbury used 17 hits and added two runs in the seventh inning to take a 7-1 lead, sending Funkstown to a fifth-place finish in the eight-team, double-elimination tournament. Funkstown pitchers Kyle Robinson and Josh Bowers combined to allow only three walks in the game.


Drew Crawford led Funkstown (33-13) with two hits and an RBI while Phillip Powell also had two hits the final game of the season.


Valley 7-8 Tournament

Conococheague 10, Pen Mar 7: Brandon Iseminger and Jack Kelly each had two hits for Conococheague. Tyler Bricker had three hits and Tim Ingram had two hits for Pen Mar.

Hub City League

Breakway 15, Hub City Heat 5: Donnie Blickenstaff had four hits and Mike Green had three, including a home run, to lead Breakway. Greg Dowler had two home runs and Jake Ward added one.

Southern Sun Studio 20, Coors Light 15: Donnie Blickenstaff hit the game-winning grand slam and Mike Green had three home runs to lead Southern Sun. Jake Ward had four hits, while Tanner Bayer, Josh Ward and Les Martin each added three.

Hagerstown Church Softball

Hagerstown Bible 13, Hagerstown Grace 9: John Hill and Ralph Bradley each had three hits and Kevin Hartman homered to lead Hagerstown Bible. Kenny Shanholtz had three hits and Mike Mowen homered for Grace.

Five Forks 14, Virginia Avenue 7: Brad Gift had four hits and Dan McCleaf added three, including a home run, to lead Five Forks. Caleb Moses and Mike Pickerall each had three hits for Virginia Avenue.

St. Mark's 13, Crossroads Green 6: Brian Pingle had five hits for St. Mark's. Dave Baker had two hits for Crossroads Green.

West End Baptist 7, Christ Lutheran 6: Shane Wilt, Dan Elgin Jr. and Steve Presgraves each had three hits to lead West End Baptist. Eric Fitzgerald had three hits, including a home run, for Christ Lutheran.
