A Hagerstown man was taken into custody Sunday in connection with the stabbings of his parents, the Hagerstown Police Department said.

Douglas Stuart Morgan, 55, of 809 Florida Ave., was charged with one count each of attempted second-degree murder and first-degree assault and two counts each of reckless endangerment and second-degree assault.

About 9:41 a.m., police and emergency responders were dispatched to 809 Florida Ave., for reports of a stabbing, a Washington County 911 Center spokeswoman said.

Police said Morgan's father was stabbed multiple times in the head and body and his mother was stabbed once on the hand during an incident at the family's residence Sunday. Police did not release the name or ages of the victims, referring to them only as an elderly male and an elderly female.

According to the Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation, the owners of the house are Sherman L. and Ruth E. Morgan.

Sherman Morgan was listed as a patient at Washington County Hospital Sunday evening, though his condition was not available, a hospital spokesman said. The spokesman said there was no record of Ruth Morgan being treated there.

Douglas Morgan was being held at the Washington County Detention Center on $850,000 bond, a detention center spokesman said.

A Washington County District Court commissioner was not available to release charging documents on the incident Sunday. Several attempts to reach members of the Hagerstown Police Department for further comment on the investigation were unsuccessful.
