Student registration help is available

Middle-school students new to Washington County or new to an attendance district should register at their new schools prior to the Aug. 25 start date.

Washington County's middle-school counselors will be available at each middle school Tuesday, Aug. 10, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. to assist parents, guardians and students with their middle-school registration.

Students registering with Washington County Public Schools for the first time, need to supply the following:

- Proof of age - Bring a copy of the student's birth certificate.

- Proof of immunization - The immunization record must be signed by a physician and show that the second MMR was given after age 1.

- Proof of residency -Bring a rental lease, utility bill, mortgage payment, credit card or property tax bill to show that the student resides in Washington County.


If the student is transferring schools within Washington County, parents and guardians need only supply a proof of residency.

Orientations slated at area high schools

A number of local high schools will host orientations for freshmen or new students and their parents or guardians.

- Boonsboro High School will hold a freshman and new student orientation on Monday, Aug. 23 from 6 to 6:50 p.m., with an evening to meet teachers to follow from 7 to 8 p.m.

The orientation will include an introductory program presented by administrators, teachers and students concerning curricular, co-curricular and extracurricular information, as well as information about attendance, grading and discipline issues.

- South Hagerstown High School will hold an orientation for incoming freshmen and new students on Wednesday, Aug. 11 at 7 p.m.

The program will start in the South High auditorium with a welcome and information session for the new students. Students, parents and guardians may tour the school building, and students will be able to pick up their schedules.

- Smithsburg High School will host an orientation on Monday, Aug. 23 at 2 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. The orientation will begin in the school's auditorium and will be followed by school building tours.

- Williamsport High School will host an open house for new and returning students on Monday, Aug. 23 beginning at 7 p.m. The program will begin in the school auditorium. Student parking permits will be available for sale to juniors and seniors. Cost of the permit is $20.

Mandatory meeting for athletes slated

A mandatory preseason meeting for student athletes participating in fall sports at North Hagerstown High School will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 10 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The program will begin in the auditorium. All student athletes must complete a physical before participating in school sports. Forms are available in the North Hagerstown High office Monday through Thursday between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. The completed forms must be returned by Aug. 10.
