Area roundup - Funkstown dropped in opener

FREDERICK, Md. - Funkstown grabbed a 5-0 lead that held through four innings behind the pitching of Andy Taylor but Gaithersburg rallied to post an 8-7 win on Friday in the Maryland State Tournament at McCurdy Field.

Taylor hit a solo home run to open the scoring in the second inning and Phillip Powell added homers in the fourth and sixth innings.

Gaithersburg hit Funkstown with a five-run seventh inning, putting the loss on reliever Josh Bussard.

Nathan Himes had two hits for Funkstown, which drops into the losers' bracket in the double-elimination tournament and plays Pasadena this morning at 9.
