Fall softball


Registration for Washington County Girls Softball League fall ball will be held July 31 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and Aug. 2-6 from 6-7 p.m. at the Kemps Mill Softball Complex.

Fall baseball


Players who want to participate in Hagerstown PONY League fall ball can register at T&R Tire, 117 W. Franklin Street in Hagerstown, until Aug. 5. Ask for Russ Robinson. The league is open to all returning PONY League players, other 13-year-old players in the area and players who have graduated from Little League.

Youth baseball camps


The KMS baseball camp will be held July 30-31 from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at Clear Spring High School. The camp is open to players ages 9-14 and registration fee is $45. The camp director is Keith Mark Shives, formerly of the Kansas City Royals farm system and Florida International university and presently the baseball coach at Clear Spring. Camp will emphasize fundamental drills, infield and outfield play, base running, bunting, hitting, pitching and catching. Each player will receive a camp T-shirt. The KMS pitching camp will be held July 31 at 1:30 p.m. at Clear Spring High School. The camp is open to players ages 12-16 and registration fee is $30. The camp director is Keith Mark Shives, formerly of the Kansas City Royals farm system and Florida International university and presently the baseball coach at Clear Spring. Additional instruction will be given by Team Maryland pitching coach and former Boonsboro High coach Fred Kreiger. The focus of the camp is on arm strength, throwing mechanics, pick-offs and pitcher fielding techniques. Each camper will have an individual bullpen session to develop a future throwing plan. Softball tryouts


The PA Xplosion girls 18U softball team is having tryouts for their Fall and Summer 2005 tournament team. Tryouts are held weekly. Girls ages 14-18 are eligible. Contact Dave Funk at 717-352-3403 for tryout times and locations.




The Tri-State Thunders girls fast-pitch softball organization is having tryouts for its 14U, 16U and 18U teams Aug. 10, 15, 19 and 22 at 5:30 p.m. at the Pinesburg Softball Complex. The organization is looking for talented, dedicated athletes who are looking to advance their softball skills and compete at the highest levels. Softball camp


The Girls Rule Softball School will hold a free softball clinic Aug. 2-7 at Kemps Mill Softball Complex. The clinic will focus on softball basics and advanced skills and is open to elementary and middle school players. Sessions run from 6-8 p.m. Monday-Friday; 10 a.m.-noon on Saturday. C&O Canal 5-Mile Run


The 23rd annual Gary Brown Memorial C&O Canal 5-Mile Run is set for Aug. 28 in Williamsport. The race begins and ends at Riverbottom Park, adjacent to the C&O Canal. The course is out-and-back on the canal's flat, dirt towpath. All finishers will receive an official "finisher" T-shirt. Awards will be given to the top overall and age-group performers. Hunter safety course


A Maryland state hunter safety course will be held Aug. 4, 5 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at the Brunswick, Md., City Park Building on East Potomac Street and Aug. 7 from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Lions Club in Rosemont, Md. This is a three-day course and you must pre-register in order to attend. Cost is $5 and space is limited. For more information or to register, contact Geri Reynolds at 301-834-7500, ext. 3.

Basic boating course


The City of Brunswick, Md., will be sponsoring a basic boating course for the 2004 season Aug. 16, 17 and 19 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at the City Park Building on East Potomac Street. This is a three-day course and is required by the Department of Natural Resources for anyone born after July 1, 1972 before operating a vessel on state waters. Cost is $5 and space is limited. Shepherd football tickets


Season tickets are now on sale for the 2004 Shepherd University football season. The Rams have five home games his season, with the home opener Sept. 11 against Slippery Rock.
