Suns drop a pair

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - The Kannapolis Intimidators swept the Hagerstown Suns 5-4 and 1-0 in a South Atlantic League Northern Division doubleheader Wednesday.

In the first game, Mike Wagner's solo home run gave the Suns (11-22, 39-61) a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. After Kannapolis tied the game in the third, Hagerstown went up 4-1 in the sixth on Jonathan Armitage's two-run single and Tim Hutting's RBI single.

The Intimidators answered with four runs in their half of the sixth on a two-run double from Wesley Whisler and a two-run single from Antoin Gray.

Fernando Hernandez (2-1) pitched one-plus innings of shutout relief for the win, while Joe Bateman (7-4) allowed one run - the go-ahead run - in 2/3 innings of relief for the loss.

In the second game, Hagerstown's Ben Thurmond (4-5) and Kannapolis' Brian Miller (8-9) each allowed two hits in six innings. But Thurmond gave up a run in the bottom of the sixth, as the Intimidators broke the scoreless tie on Leo Daigle's sacrifice fly.

Orionny Lopez pitched a scoreless seventh inning for his first save of the year.
