County resident blasts hospital plan
A Washington County resident fired the first volleys Tuesday in what has become nearly a weekly ritual at Hagerstown City Council meetings: disputing claims made by supporters of plans to move Washington County Hospital away from downtown to a site near Robinwood Medical Center.
Usually the comments come from the council members. Tuesday night, however, local business owner and community activist J. Michael Nye led the pack, reading from prepared comments.
Nye, 61, commended city officials for "having the foresight and political will" to fight for city residents and those outside the city. Nye does not live inside city limits but near the proposed hospital site.
Nye said he and others in the Robinwood area support the idea that hospital officials would seek a special exception to the county's zoning rules, which would allow county residents to comment on the matter. The zoning process has been one of the contentious issues between city and hospital officials over the proposed plans.
