Computer intruders come disguised as friends

July 27, 2004

Adware: Adware functions range from profiling your online surfing and spending habits - the type of adware or spyware dubbed "BackDoor Santa" - to popping up annoying ad windows as you surf the Net. Some adware is bundled with other software without the user's knowledge, and removing the adware can end the program with which it was bundled.

Drive-by downloads: Adware can perform drive-by downloads, which are accomplished by providing a misleading dialogue box or other method of stealth installation.

Malware: Slang for malicious software, malware is software designed specifically to disrupt a computer system.

Spyware: Spyware secretly gathers user information and activity without the user's knowledge, and sends it back to the spyware creator's machine. The spy can keep tabs on whatever you do on the computer.
