WILLIAMSPORT - Left-hander Jake Bachtell turned in a stellar pitching performance and Zach Snodderly drove in two runs as Maugansville defeated West Salisbury 5-1 in a losers' bracket game at the Maryland Little League 11-12 Tournament on Monday night.

Maugansville plays East Frederick - a 13-1 winner over Rising Sun - today at 6 p.m.

"We're on top of the world right now," Maugansville manager Danny Braithwaite said. "Unlike last night (in a 4-1 loss to South Caroline), we got big hits early when runners were on base."

West Salisbury opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first. Starting pitcher Chuck Vane led off with a double and, two wild pitches later, scored to give West Salisbury a 1-0 lead.

Maugansville answered in the second inning. Ryan Sword walked, went to second on Bradley Kiracofe's single and scored on Mike Braithwaite's double. Jordan Wivell singled to score Kiracofe for a 2-1 lead.

In the third inning, singles by Corey Morgan, Bachtell and Alec Long gave Maugansville a 3-1 lead.

Snodderly drove in the final two runs of the game with a single that scored Bachtell and Long.

Eric Hickman relieved Vane in the third inning and shut down Maugansville the rest of the way, allowing only two hits while striking out seven in three innings.

But Bachtell wouldn't bend, pitching a complete-game two-hitter with eight strikeouts for the win.

"Jake pitched a really tough game," said Braithwaite. "Those left-handers have a different way of pitching. I don't know what it is, but he kept it all together."

Bachtell was aided by stellar defense on the part of second baseman Korey Walker, who helped turn double plays in the third and fourth innings that may have stopped potential rallies.

Snodderly and Braithwaite had two hits each for Maugansville.

Vane had both of West Salisbury's hits.

East Frederick 13, Rising Suns 1

Zack Jones pitched a two-hitter with eight strikeouts and had two hits, including a two-run homer in the third inning, as East Frederick cruised past Rising Sun in four innings in Monday's other losers' bracket game.

Ryan Arotin had a two-run double in the fourth inning while Eric Conway and Stephen Hammerle each added two hits for East Frederick.

Cameron Hullsey and Paul Nickle each had a hit for Rising Sun.
