Man stable after fatal Friday Crash

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - A Summit Point man who was injured in a car wreck Friday night that claimed the life of his wife was in stable condition Sunday in Washington (D.C.) Hospital Center, said a hospital spokeswoman.

Russell Smith and his wife, Robin J. Smith, were traveling eastbound on Summit Point Road at 6:47 p.m. when their vehicle collided with a westbound vehicle driven by David R. Derr of Charles Town, West Virginia State Police said.

Police said Derr's vehicle veered into the opposite lane after Derr lost control in a curve during a storm.

Derr was treated at Jefferson Memorial Hospital and released following the head-on collision.

Robin J. Smith, 50, was pronounced dead at Jefferson Memorial Hospital 30 minutes after the crash, police said.
