River classes include:

  • Class I (easy): Water flowing with a few small waves and maybe some rocks off to the side.

  • Class II (novice): Waves might be up to about 3 feet high.

  • Class III (Intermediate): Rapids might include small falls, some large rocks and large waves.

  • Class IV (advanced): Rapids marked by turbulent waves, a hard current and rocks that require skillful navigation.

  • Class V (expert): Rapids include large rocks, deceitful currents, steep drops and colossal waves.

  • Class VI (extreme): For experts only, rapids marked by fierce waves, forbidding rocks, big drops and strong currents. Commercial rafting does not occur on Class VI rapids.
