Dementia education

Understanding the Dementia Journey will be presented at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4, at Avalon Manor Health Care Center's Longmeadow Dining Hall on Marsh Pike in Hagerstown.

The hourlong program will help family members and caregivers coping with this disease to understand the disease's progression.

The program is free and is presented by the Alzheimer's Association, Greater Maryland Chapter, Western Maryland Region, and Avalon Manor Health Care Center.

Alzheimer's conference

Hagerstown Community College will host the annual Western Maryland Alzheimer's Conference, which focuses on dementia and coping with change, on Friday, Aug. 27, at Hagerstown Community College's Valley Mall Center.

Presentations include "Together We Prepare" by Cindy Blackstock Kline of the American Red Cross; "Creating a Safe Emotional Environment" by Mona Butala, education coordinator for the Alzheimer's Association; "Best Laid Plans" by Edwina Stewart, counselor to older adults and their families; "Recovery - Getting Back to Normal" by Patrick Ricker with the Critical Incident Stress De-brief Team of Washington County Hospital; and "Safe Return" by Anna Offutt, program coordinator of the Alzheimer's Association.

Water aerobics

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - The Shepherd University Wellness Center will offer water aerobic classes Tuesday, July 27, through Thursday, Sept. 30.

Classes will be held twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 to 9 a.m. The fee is $140; $60 for Wellness Center members; $80 for Shepherd staff members and faculty.
