July 25, 2004|by MARLO BARNHART

SUMMIT POINT, W.Va. - A head-on crash during a storm Friday night claimed the life of a Summit Point woman who was a passenger in a vehicle driven by her husband, West Virginia State Police said.

Robin J. Smith, 50, was pronounced dead at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson, W.Va., about a half-hour after the 6:47 p.m. two-vehicle collision on Summit Point Road, police said.

Russell Smith and the other driver, David R. Derr of Charles Town, W.Va., both were taken to Jefferson Memorial Hospital with severe bruises and cuts, according to Trooper M.J. Glende in a written press release.

A check Saturday with Jefferson Memorial Hospital nursing personnel revealed one of the men had been transported to the Washington (D.C.) Hospital Center and the other was treated at Jefferson Memorial and later released.

A spokeswoman at the Washington Hospital Center Saturday confirmed Russell Smith was a patient there, but was unable to give any condition.

Police said the Smiths were eastbound on Summit Point Road when their vehicle was struck by Derr's westbound vehicle, which had veered into the opposite lane of travel after police said the driver lost control on a curve.

Derr and the Smiths all were wearing seat belts, police said.
