The Herald-Mail's annual landmarks contest is back for its eighth year.

Once again, readers will be takin' it to the streets, searching for the Hagerstown locations that are hiding in plain sight.

Do you know where these are?

If you do - and you also know where to find the five other photographic clues that will be published one per day on section fronts this week - you will have a chance to win $500.

Last year there were 10 clues. This year there are a dozen.

We are publishing photographic clues from buildings and structures in Hagerstown. They're not necessarily landmarks. (We've been doing this for eight years so we had to loosen the requirements to avoid repeating ourselves.)

Participants just need to spot and identify the clues. All 12 can be spotted within three blocks north, south, east or west of Hagerstown's Public Square. Basically, that's a six-block-by-six-block quadrant with Public Square as its center. Clues might be found in the area west to Walnut Street, north to Randolph Avenue, east to Cannon Avenue and south to Lee Street. The images are visible from ground level, but they might be blatant on the front of a building or found on the back and visible from an alley or parking lot.

When you've found and identified the landmarks in the images, fill in their names or descriptions and locations on the numbered entry blank on page E10. To qualify, entries must include contestant's name, age, address and daytime and evening telephone numbers. Each person may submit only one entry.

Identify as many as you can for a chance to win. The person who correctly identifies all 12 pictures will win $500. If there's a tie, one name will be drawn randomly from the names of the winners. If no one correctly identifies all the photos, entries with the most correct answers will be eligible for a drawing.

Employees of The Herald-Mail and their families are not eligible.

Please submit your response in one of the following ways:

  • Drop it off at the Herald-Mail office, 100 Summit Ave., Hagerstown, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays.

  • Mail it in care of Landmarks/Lifestyle, The Herald-Mail Co., P.O. Box 439, Hagerstown, MD 21741.

  • Send it via e-mail to

  • Fax it to 301-714-0245, attention Lifestyle.

Be sure to include daytime and evening phone numbers. The deadline for entries is noon Monday, Aug. 9.

The winner's name and photograph, along with the correct answers, will be published Sunday, Aug. 15.

Good luck and have fun.
