City can collect and haul old tires

The City of Hagerstown's Department of Public Works now has the authority to collect and haul old tires as part of its trash collection program.

This service is available to residential customers, not commercial customers.

The fee will be $7.50 per tire for those measuring 22 inches in diameter or less and $15 per tire for those larger than 22 inches in diameter. Most cars, pickup trucks and SUVs use the smaller tires.

Residents can fill out a form at the Office of Public Works, 51 W. Memorial Blvd. Collections will be arranged for the second Wednesday of each month and payment must be made before the collection date.

The first collection date is Aug. 11, according to Eric Deike, manager of Public Works.

For more information, call 301-739-8577, ext. 178.

The City of Hagerstown is looking for volunteer rangers, who open the course, take out flags, group golfers as needed, enforce golf rules and keep play moving. Rangers have flexible hours, with primary coverage needed on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from May through September.

"Qualified individuals would receive compensation in the form of free golf, based on the number of hours worked," said Recreation Superintendent Jamie Shyda. "We are looking for people who are diplomatic, customer-service oriented and are familiar with golf rules and etiquette."

Volunteers must have valid driver's licenses.

For more information, call the Parks and Recreation Office at 301-739-8577, ext. 180, or the golf course at 301-733-8630.
