Ruiz's walk-off blast sinks Suns

July 22, 2004

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - Randy Ruiz hit a two-run home run off Hagerstown reliever Brian Wilson in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Lakewood BlueClaws a dramatic 3-2 victory over the Suns on Wednesday.

Wilson (1-4) walked Bryan Hansen to start the inning, and Ruiz wasted little time laying waste to the Suns (10-16 second half), who had scored twice in the eighth inning to take the lead.

Tim Hutting doubled off Lakewood reliever Chris Honsa to lead off the eighth for Hagerstown. Jon Coutlangus dropped a bunt down for a single, and a throwing error sent Coutlangus to second and Hutting to the plate to tie the game at 1-1.

After Honsa struck out the next two Suns, Pat Dobson doubled to center to score Coutlangus as Hagerstown took the lead.

Ruiz scored Lakewood's only other run in the second after being hit by a pitch. Jose Cortez and Omar Bramasco each singled to load the bases and Tim Moss' fielder's choice groundout scored Ruiz.

Hagerstown starter Mike Musgrave allowed five hits and struck out six in five innings, while reliever Aaron Sobieraj worked three scoreless innings of relief.

Lakewood (12-14) starter Nate Cabrera allowed one hit and struck out seven in six innings in a hard-luck no-decision. Maximo Rayes (7-1) pitched a perfect ninth to earn the victory.
