Mail Call

July 21, 2004

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"On the subject of John Kerry, one wonders how anyone can find anything bad to say about him. He manages to be both a patriot and a man of conscience. He did both his military duty and then protested what he felt was wrong with it. Very few people have the courage to do that."

"How did some people get the crazy idea that Bush started the war? Think again. The war actually started on 9/11 when the terrorists flew the planes into the towers and the Pentagon and headed towards the White House. Had Bush not gone after them, do you think they wouldn't have struck again and again and then killed who knows how many more? I am thankful that he stood strong and took action. Clinton didn't go after them earlier and Kerry certainly wouldn't have. He speaks out both sides of his mouth. First he is for something, then he isn't. He is now saying that he is against abortion and gay marriages and then leaving it to someone else to decide. Who would want someone like that to run our country? Certainly not I."

- Hagerstown

"I am calling about the prices being raised on the water and sewer bill. How in the world do they expect us seniors to keep paying these raises? We are on a fixed income and can't afford this. Why can't we pay for what we use instead of a paying for what everyone else uses?"

"I am calling in response to people bad-mouthing Kerry. Where was Bush and Cheney when Kerry was there in Vietnam? There are many people that should have been heroes and be in the Hero Hall of Fame, but their names are down there on that wall. Just because they aren't recognized as a hero, doesn't mean that they aren't a hero."

"Congratulations to Zachary Rowland of West End Little League for receiving the Founder's Award. He is always there to help anyone who needs it at the field. Again, congratulations, Zachary."

"For the person who called in and said they are going to vote for Bush because he is against same-sex marriage. It seems to me that you think it's OK to have people killed but it's not OK to have same-sex marriage. It seems kind of strange."

"For the right-wing Republicans: I think you people should be with the KKK. You act, think and talk just like them and the KKK came out of the Republican Party, anyway."

"For the people in Sharpsburg, I don't know why you don't want the KKK there. You can have the Republican Party there with them because they both give out the same kind of hate and discontent."

"Isn't it odd that Bush didn't even have a chance to receive any Purple Hearts. How convenient that the Pentagon destroyed or lost his records, to show that he even showed up. Boy, what a coward."

"To the people in Funkstown: I can't believe a little town of 900 is expected to pay a couple of a million dollars' worth of water and sewer plant bills. The people making the insane decisions for its townspeople should be impeached or voted out in the next town election. You people of Funkstown really need to hire your own attorney and stop this before it's too late."

"Sending Martha Stewart to jail was absolutely wrong. She didn't hurt anyone but herself, she didn't steal money like these big CEOs of some companies do. She did it to herself and didn't hurt anyone but herself."

"Congratulations to the Maugansville Little League 11- and 12-year-old All-Stars for winning the district championship. Way to go, Maugansville, what a team effort."

"To the person who keeps calling about the KKK and spreading hate. I have news for you, there are other people that spread hate, too. Listen to Jesse Jackson sometime. To start with, you shouldn't judge people by the color of their skin, you should judge them by their actions. Actions speak louder than words. The KKK is not the only people who think for themselves and make decisions based on being able to speak for yourself."

"I think it's ridiculous that the Funkstown sewer rate is increasing so much. For 11,000 gallons, the current rate is $38.74, but the new rate will be $100.70. That is just too much. Why aren't they seeking auxiliary funding? Otherwise, the folks in Funkstown are going to have to install outhouses again."

"Martha has been sentenced now. She hasn't done any more than what anyone else has done in the U.S. President Clinton, look what he did; he didn't get jail time. So why would they give Martha jail time? The lady is an icon. People like her. Leave her alone."
