Suns' hitting, pitching in sync

July 20, 2004

DELMARVA, Md. - Early hitting and good pitching in the late innings led the Hagerstown Suns to a 9-6 victory over the Delmarva Shorebirds on Monday night.

Jason Columbus drove in three runs with two clutch hits, Mike Schmidt drilled a two-run homer, his fifth, and Mike Wag-ner added a solo blast, his ninth, as the Suns (10-14) rolled to an 8-2 lead through 4 1/2 innings.

After Suns starter and winning pitcher Juan Serrato (6-5) gave up three runs in the fifth, Jesse Floyd came on in relief and racked up six strikeouts with three hitless innings.

Tim Alvarez came on in the ninth inning to record his 19th save.

The Suns, who close out the mini two-game series tonight, did all of their damage against Adam Loewen, a former No. 1 draft pick of the Baltimore Orioles, who fell to 2-4.
