Dairy princess contest is Thursday in Frederick

July 20, 2004

Maryland's newest Dairy Princess will be chosen Thursday at the FSK Holiday Inn in Frederick, Md.

The event begins at 6:45 p.m. with a reception and silent auction.

Vying for the state title are Laura Gaver, Frederick County Dairy Princess; Jolene McKenzie, Carroll County Dairy Princess; Heather Connelly, South Central Dairy Princess; and Suzanne Perdue, Upper Chesapeake Dairy Princess.

"Each of these girls brings such a different perspective of the industry to the table," says Debra Spurrier, state program coordinator. "They all have submitted impressive rsums detailing their dairy experience, as well as their school and community activities. I know this competition will be close."

Current Maryland Dairy Princess Katie Mason will be crowning the winner.

"This has truly been an amazing year," Katie said of her reign. "I have been honored to serve Maryland's dairy farmers as an ambassador for nature's most nearly perfect food - milk. While I am sad to end my reign, I know whoever is chosen will do her best to continue the tradition of promoting milk, cheese and yogurt to consumers across this great state."

For the silent auction, each region has created a special auction item. Proceeds will benefit the regional committee's promotion activities for the year. The state committee's items will benefit the Frances Kepler Memorial Scholarship fund.
