A second boy involved in an ATV accident in Boonsboro on Independence Day weekend died last week as a result of injuries he suffered in the crash, the Washington County Sheriff's Department said Monday.

Cpl. James Grimm said the 8-year-old resident of Woodbridge, Va., whose identity he declined to release, was pronounced dead last week at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Grimm declined to release information about the boy's injuries or his identity because his parents requested that the information be kept private.

Police were called to the 7000 block of Wheeler Road on July 3 at about 12:50 p.m. for a reported head-on ATV collision in a nearby field. Three children were injured in the two-vehicle collision. The unidentified boy and Zachary T. Beard, 11, of 7140 Wheeler Road, sustained fatal injuries.

Beard was pronounced dead at Washington County Hospital within hours of the crash, according to information released by Deputy Medical Examiner Stephen Kotch and the Sheriff's Department.

A third boy, Tyler Hollis, 8, of Boonsboro, was flown to Johns Hopkins Children's Center for treatment following the crash and was released within a few days.

Neal E. Beard, Zachary's father, declined Monday evening to release the name of the other boy killed during the accident. Beard said the boy, who was in a coma, was taken off life support last week.

The boy's funeral service is scheduled for today in Virginia, Beard said.
