Freshman orientation planned at North High

Freshman orientation at North Hagerstown High School is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 21 from 5 to 8 p.m.

A variety of presentations in areas such as academic requirements, extracurricular activities and support services will introduce students to the high school experience. Student Government Association representatives will provide guided tours.

The evening will conclude with a meal at which students, parents and staff will have an opportunity to socialize.

North High parents can meet teachers

North Hagerstown High School's Meet the Teacher Night will be Thursday, Sept. 9 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Parents will have a chance to meet with teachers one on one to discuss expectations and curriculum.

Arkansas governor takes over group

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee on Wednesday took over the chairmanship of the Education Commission of the States.


Huckabee will serve in the position for two years. Other officers named during the group's conference in Orlando were Delaware Sen. David Sokola as vice chairman and Oklahoma Superintendent of Public Instruction Sandy Garrett as treasurer.

Huckabee promised to make arts education a priority during his tenure leading the nonprofit group, which advises governors, legislators and state education officials.

He succeeds Virginia Gov. Mark Warner in the position. New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson was chosen as chairman-elect.
