Driver hospitalized after Thursday crash

CASCADE - The driver of a 1990 Chevrolet and several juveniles were hospitalized Thursday night after their vehicle crashed on the grounds of the former Fort Ritchie U.S. Army base, Washington County Sheriff's deputies said.

Teresa Lynn Cooper, 35, of 474-1 W. Reckord Ave. in Cascade, was in fair condition Friday at Washington County Hospital, where she was flown by Maryland State Police medevac helicopter following the 9:30 p.m. accident.

A condition was not listed for Cooper Saturday night, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The names of the five other occupants weren't released by deputies, but they reportedly were taken to hospitals in Washington County and Waynesboro, Pa. No information about their conditions could be obtained.

In the press release, Deputy Christine McAllister said the station wagon was southbound on Cushman Avenue when Cooper found she was unable to slow the vehicle due to a mechanical failure.

While attempting to turn onto West Banfill Avenue, the vehicle ran off the road, continued onto a concrete bridge abutment and went airborne. The vehicle then ran down into a culvert and came to rest after hitting several rocks and a tree, according to the press release.
