Chamber seeks applicants for Impact Award

The Hagerstown-Washington County Chamber of Commerce is accepting applications for the second annual Nonprofit Impact Award, to be presented at its Nov. 16 Focus on Philanthropy Forum.

Any 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with an office in Washington County may submit an application to the Chamber.

The award is sponsored by the Community Foundation of Washington County, which will grant $1,000 to the winner in November, which is National Philanthropy Month.

Community Foundation Executive Director and forum Chairman Brad Sell said the award will bring deserved recognition to nonprofit organizations.

"It will show the impact they have on the citizens of Washington County," he said. "By honoring a nonprofit, it will generate more interest in nonprofits."

Sell said the foundation decided to sponsor the award because Washington County has a significant number of nonprofit organizations.

Every application must describe the organization's background and community impact, and provide statements from community members who have benefited from its work.

The applications will be reviewed by a board of five volunteers who have worked in the community and "who understand nonprofit work," Sell said.

The group will select five finalists to be recognized in November.

Sell said nonprofit organizations are invaluable to the community. "They generate money in the community, on top of their social impact," he said. "They are more cost-efficient in providing human services where the government can't."

All applications and questions may be directed to Donna Long at 301-739-2015, ext. 100.
