CSX says derailment caused by shift in boxcar's load

July 07, 2004|by JULIE E. GREENE

A freight train derailment that closed a rail line and a stretch of Eastern Boulevard for more than 24 hours happened when the load of paper in one of the boxcars shifted, CSX Transportation spokeswoman Misty Skipper said Tuesday morning.

The load shifting caused the boxcar to lean and it took six other freight cars with it, Skipper said.

The derailment occurred just after 5:45 p.m. on June 28 near the intersection of Eastern Boulevard and Security Road.

When asked if the load was not properly secured, Skipper said it would be difficult to determine after the fact why the paper shifted.

The accident caused no injuries or hazardous conditions, a fire official has said.

CSX officials still were calculating the cost of the accident, Skipper said. Generally, that kind of information is not shared with the public, she said.
