Shelter needs people to prepare lunches

July 02, 2004

Winter may seem a long way off but REACH staff and volunteers have begun looking for groups and individuals to prepare bag lunches for those who will stay at the REACH Cold Weather Shelter from Oct. 31 through April 3, 2005.

The need is for 30 to 40 lunches for the men and women who use the shelter.

If interested, contact the REACH office as soon as possible to schedule a week and to discuss the details. Call 301-733-2371 or via e-mail-

Lunches include one sandwich, fruit/pudding cup, chips etc. This year, REACH is asking that any fruit be separate, so that the guests who want it can pick it up and add it to their bags.

The group is also responsible for supplying up to 10 extra sandwiches per day for a one-week period

Each lunch coordinator is responsible for initiating contact with the shelter staff prior to the scheduled week. The coordinator is responsible for maintaining daily contact with the shelter staff to remain updated on the number of lunches/ extra sandwiches that are needed.

Daily arrangements must be made for the lunches to be dropped off the night before.

This service helps many of the guests who can't afford to buy lunch to get back on their feet. It also fulfills a basic need for food when the shelter is closed for the day.

REACH stands for Religious Effort to Assist and Care for the Homeless.
