Mail Call

July 01, 2004

"I used to think Hagerstown was such a giving town, but I am handicapped. I lost my right hand and right leg about six years ago. I had my story in the paper about four years ago trying to get donations for a car or a van. I got neither one. I wanted to go back to work, but a few weeks later, I saw in the paper where a gentleman who just wanted a van to have transportation and he got one. I, every year go around to every Salvation Army or Red Cross thing I see at Christmas, I put money in. I even took my name off the Angel Tree. I don't have any money at all, my husband left me a year ago and I just wanted to know where all these resources are for people like me who would love to have a car to go out and find a job. I live off of disability, but I would love to go back to work."

"I was wondering if anyone has any information about the school supply list for the eighth-graders at Smithsburg."

"To the person who called in and said that all the people who call Mail Call don't have a life. Apparently you don't have a life either because you took the time to call in."

"I was just wondering why we can't find flags at any of the stores. We need them for the graves."

"I don't understand why so many people have called in and attacked the callers who are complaining about the fireworks that are going to be at the stadium at Hagerstown. One person almost compares the other to a terrorist, remember 9/11, celebrate your freedom. What do you want, your house blown to bits? This is the most ridiculous statement I have ever heard. This isn't about freedom, this is about a neighborhood that is going to be besieged with noise. They may have had to have a public hearing on it before someone can be allowed to do that for so many consecutive nights in a row. I am sure that many of the people calling wouldn't want it in their back yard. Stop using 9/11 for the most trivial issues in the world. You people need to look up the word 'freedom' in the dictionary."

"It didn't take as long as I thought. Line Kiln Road was totally blocked last Saturday evening. It was because a tow truck was rescuing the vehicle of a young lady who fortunately only had two wheels and her car danglingly over the bank. Luckily for her, she got out uninjured. Don't worry about the rest of us, we are just being run off the road every day. I really wish someone could patrol that road to look at the amount of traffic and speed."

"Did anyone else read the City Council briefs in the paper the other day. There is a new bakery opening in downtown Hagerstown and the city of Hagerstown is loaning the owner $50,000 and if the bakery stays open for more than 60 months the $50,000 loan is forgiven. My goodness, what a way to make money."

"I walked around City Park on Sunday evening. The park looked very nice. It appears to be well maintained. Thanks to the people who are responsible for the maintenance. I am sorry to hear about the mysterious death of the three swans. I hope they find the cause of their deaths."

"Thanks, Louise, for volunteering to go over the police records and all the habitual offenders who reside in Washington County for the Hagers-town Landlords Association. Thanks for coming forward and agreeing to do this for free for the Landlord's Association. Thanks once again Ms. Dawson."

"Someone made the suggestion that Habitat goes out and negotiates with developers and contractors to put up all the housing around the community so their people will start out in a new community. Why doesn't someone follow up on Bob Maginnis' idea and contract with a developer working on a condo arrangement for one of these old apartment houses, so Habitat will go in and work on one of the condos, that way there will be one new family that won't be different from any of the other new families."

"Why is Long Meadow having its fireworks on Wednesday, a full four days before the Fourth of July? That seems to be too soon to me."

"I agree with the people about the fireworks at the stadium, they are very noisy. I live near the stadium and I am sick of it, too. They have no respect for the neighbors and they don't clean anything up. The kids never get to play basketball there. I also saw in the paper about someone saying about a day care without a license. All you have to do is call 301-791-4585 and that is a day care provider through the state."

"If you don't want another Wal-Mart in Hagerstown, we would love to have one down here in Boonsboro. On Alternate 40 there is plenty of land for sale. We either have to go to Martinsburg, Charles Town, or out to the new Wal-Mart or over to Frederick to get groceries, because the little stores here are too expensive. We need a Wal-Mart down around here."

"For the ants, go to the store and get a tall yellow bottle of boric acid. It is odorless and harmless. Put it on the countertop and on the bottom of the counter. It gets rid of ants, water bugs, everything and it won't hurt you."
