Five named to building code appeals board

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - The Waynesboro Borough Council on Tuesday named five area men to serve on a newly organized Waynesboro Building Code Appeals Board.

The board will hear appeals on Pennsylvania's new statewide building code, which goes into effect Thursday.

Until now, the borough operated with its own building inspector under the National Building Officials and Code Administration (BOCA). Douglas Pyle, the borough's building inspector, resigned in May to take a job with a private firm.

The council earlier hired Michael J. Cermak, owner of Accredited Services of Waynesboro, a certified code inspector, to handle inspections under the new state code.

The borough had a building code appeals board under the BOCA code, but it only met twice in 24 years, Hamberger said.

"The new state code is much stricter. We may have some appeals," he said.

Only two of the five appointees live in the borough: Fred McCleaf, a plumber, and Larry Garver, a surveyor. The other three members are Jim Valentine, former borough engineer, and contractors Herb Sandifer and Jim Rock.
