WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Ron Flegel, a veteran Waynesboro firefighter, was appointed chief of the Waynesboro Fire Department Tuesday by the Waynesboro Borough Council following a short executive session.

Flegel, 63, was one of two applicants for the job, said Borough Manager Lloyd Hamberger. Flegel was acting chief.

"I hope I can live up to it," said Flegel, a full-time paid career firefighter with the borough for 36 years.

The council changed the chief's job from full time to permanent part time. Flegel, who replaces Dale Fishack, will receive no salary as part-time chief but will get $400 a month for mileage and other expenses, Hamberger said.

The fire chief worked part time until 1997, when Fishack became the borough's first full-time chief. He was paid $36,000 a year.

Fishack served until earlier this year, when he was charged with two misdemeanor counts of theft for taking fire department money, according to court records.

The charges were dismissed this month after Fishack agreed to pay restitution and court costs in a deal worked out between Franklin County Assistant District Attorney T.R. Williams, state police investigators and Fishack's lawyer.
