June 28, 2004|by DAVE McMILLION

A Jet Ski rider was flown to Washington County Hospital Sunday afternoon after he hit a wake in the Potomac River and was thrown over the handlebars of the craft, a fire official said.

The accident occurred in an area known as Pop's Place, which is a grouping of vacation homes, according to Capt. Thomas Gorman of the Bedington Volunteer Fire Department.

Pop's Place is located less than two miles downstream from the Fish and Gun Club on the Maryland side of the river, Gorman said.

Gorman declined to release the name of the injured person, who did not appear to have life-threatening injuries.

The Jet Ski rider was following a wake from a boat when he was thrown from the craft, Gorman said.

The victim appeared to have an injury to his left leg, Gorman said.

A group of bystanders docked the Jet Ski on the West Virginia side of the river for the rider after the accident, Gorman said.
