Arts council names executive director

June 27, 2004|by KATE COLEMAN

Kevin Moriarty was named executive director of the Washington County Arts Council earlier this month.

Moriarty had been hired as the council's events coordinator in March.

Moriarty, 46, said half of his job as director of the arts council is raising money, and the other half is spending it. The organization's mission is to enrich the social, artistic, cultural and economic life of Washington County by fostering the arts, he said. The arts council does those things by sponsoring events and programs. The arts council has published Antietam Review, a national literary magazine, since 1982, and the council's gallery features the work of area artists.

Programs also include storytelling in area parks, a children's art camp, concerts and a children's art festival. Moriarty hopes to expand opportunities for talented young people and would like to see the council's scholarship opportunities grow.

Moriarty came to Hagerstown last year from Howard County, Md. He most recently worked in Washington, D.C., for UNICEF. His experience includes event planning and several years as a legislative assistant.
