Ashley Grier advances in U.S. Publinx match play

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Hagerstown's Ashley Grier advanced a notch up the ladder Thursday as match play competition opened in the USGA Women's Amateur Public Links tournament at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club.

Grier posted a 2 and 1 victory over Wendra Liang, of San Francisco, to remain alive in match play. Following play Thursday, the field was reduced from 64 qualifiers to 32.

Today at 8:26 a.m., Grier will tee off in the second round of match play against Sara Brown, of Tucson, Ariz., who defeated Jooyoung Yang of Korea, 4 and 3.

Schultz tied for 48th

NASHPORT, Ohio - Hagerstown's Dirk Schultz, head professional at Black Rock Golf Course, opened with a 1-over par 73 in the 37th PGA Club Professionals Championship at Longaberger Golf Club.

Schultz posted three birdies and four bogeys in his 36-37 round, which left him tied for 48th. All three of his birdies came on par-5 holes over the 7,225-yard layout.

Mike Small, of Savoy, Ill., was the opening-round leader with a 66.

The top 25 spots in the 156-man field gain entry into the PGA Championship.
