Grier reaches match play

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Hagerstown's Ashley Grier posted two birdies on the back-nine round that helped her to an even-par 72 on Wednesday in the final stroke play round, vaulting her into today's match play round in the USGA Women's Amateur Public Links tournament at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club.

Grier, who posted an opening-round 71 on Tuesday, started with a 37 on her first nine and was tied for 16th place before her two birdies put her back into 11th place.

She birdied the 342-yard par-4 third, and after a bogey on the following hole, posted a birdie on the 402-yard par-4 sixth hole before finishing her round with three pars.

Brittany Lang, of McKinney, Texas, blistered the 6,159-yard Green Course with a 7-under par 65 for a two-day total of 135, two strokes better than Jenna Pearson, of Wheaton, Ill. Defending champion Michelle Wie ended tied for sixth place with a two-day card of 141.


In her opening match play battle, Grier will tee of at 10:22 a.m. against Wendra Liang of San Francisco, who qualified with a two-round 4-over par 148.

The top 64 golfers in the field of 156 moved on to today's 18-hole match play round. Those winning matches play 18 Friday hoping to advance to Saturday's 18-hole round and then to Sunday's 36-hole finale.


Halfway Little League

Gehr 5, Valley Storage 2: Brandon McCauley threw a six-hitter as Gehr finished the second half with a 10-0 record. McCauley had two hits as did Chris McSherry and Kent Lewis. Aaron Stottlemyer and John Adams had two hits apiece for Valley Storage.

Hagerstown Palominob

UAW 7, VFW 5: Winning pitcher Arthur Fisher hurled a complete game while Wayne Rumbaugh homered and Corey Weaver and Zach Lloyd had two hits each for UAW.

Hagerstown PONY League

Jeter 7, Firefighters 2: Tyler Hornbecker hit a three-run homer while Brian Leserte had two hits for Jeter. Brendan Palmer and Chipper Mellott each had two hits for Firefighters.

FOP 14, Redmen 4: Cody McCarthy had three hits while Greg Minnick and Cody Butts had two hits each for FOP. Paul Mersen and Colin McWilliams each had two hits for Redmen.

West End Little League

Moose 26, Stags 8: Josh Smith had three hits and A.J. Crampton, Dillon Shaffer and Kyle Head each added two hits for Moose.

High School Division

Aladdin 13, Sportsland 6: Heather White homered while Christina Line, Kara Williamson and Mallory White each had two hits for Aladdin.

Youth Division

Redmen 11, Lightning Transport 9: Kim Horchner and Sarah Hoover each had two hits and Ashley Beattie was the winning pitcher for Redmen.

Conococheague Little League

Lions 6, Taylor Trucking 1: Tanner Malloy was the winning pitcher for Lions. Tevis Palmer had three hits and Zach Bloyer had two for Taylor Trucking.

Junior Legion

Berkeley Post 14 11, Frederick Post 11 9: Jake Wines and Cody Seibert bothhit three-run home runs for Berkeley.

Charles Town Post 71 12, Berkeley Post 14 4: Logan Clark had three RBI and Jesse Simmons scored three times for Berkeley.

Berkeley Post 14 7, Charles Town Post 71 5: Justin Everhart had two hits and an RBI, Cody Seibert drove in three runs, and Logan Clark had two RBI for Berkeley.

Federal Little League

Rotary 21, Exchange 8: Matt South had four hits, including a grand slam, while Kris Burdick had three hits for Rotary. C.J. Nelling, Tyler Presgraves and Justin Mills each added two for Rotary, which won the Federal Little League championship. Patrick Salvagno homered, Chris Bogner had three hits and Andrew Yasick, Salvagno and Andrew Barnhart each added two hits for Exchange.

American Little League

Elks 8, FOP 6: Tim Hoover and Jordan Hatfield had two hits each for Elks. Darryl Tonsil had 11 strikeouts, Lewis Rudy had three hits and Brennan Stouffer added two for FOP.

Funkstown 7, Thompson Concrete 6: Billy Springhirst, Nic Martin and Jordan Anderson had two hits each for Funkstown. Nick Stubbs and Anthony Wells had two hits each for Thompson.

Valley Little League

SMRG 4, Dorsey Bros. 2: Jacob Bucher pitched a two-hitter with seven strikeouts while Jordan Thurber had two hits, including a home run, for SMRG.


Fayetteville 7, Brunswick 6

BRUNSWICK, Md. - Winning pitcher Casey Brookens scored the winning run in the ninth inning to lift Fayetteville to a victory over Brunswick.

Brunswick forced the game into extra innings as Jason Mobley hit his second two-run homer of the game in the bottom of the seventh.


Hub City Softball League

Jerry's Sports 8, South End Tavern 3: Todd Ricker, Steve Presgraves and Dave Foltz each homered for Jerry's.

Crazy Horse 16, J&L 14: Shaun Kendle homered twice and Alan Purdham had three hits for Crazy Horse.

Crazy Horse 7, Eclipse 1: Mike West and Bill Durabrow had three hits apiece for Crazy Horse.
