Suns end half with a victory

EASTLAKE, Ohio - Mike Wagner went 3-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI as the Hagerstown Suns closed out the first half of their South Atlantic League season with an 8-2 win over the Lake County Captains, snapping a seven-game losing streak.

Wagner put the Suns (28-39) on the board with a solo home run in the top of the second inning and then broke the game open with a two-out, three-run homer in the third. Jason Columbus added an RBI single in the third to give Hagerstown a 5-0 lead.

The Captains (36-34) managed just three hits off Suns starter Jesse Floyd (2-5), who earned the win with seven scoreless innings and five strikeouts. It was Floyd's longest outing of the season and lowered his ERA from 6.35 to 5.59.

Starter Aaron Laffey (2-6), the former Allegany High School standout, took the loss for the Captains after giving up eight hits and five runs with five strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings.

Hagerstown extended its lead to 6-0 in the fourth and 8-0 in the fifth. Lake County scored both of its runs in the eighth off reliever Mike Musgrave.

Derek Barrows went 3-for-5 with a solo home run for the Suns, while Jesse Schmidt and Columbus each had two hits and an RBI. Patrick Dobson also had two hits in the win.
