W.Va. man found dead under van in driveway

June 21, 2004|by DAVE McMILLION

BEDINGTON, W.Va. - Authorities believe a man died - possibly as early as Wednesday - after the van he was working on rolled back and pinned him in a driveway at a home in the Bedington area, police said Sunday.

The man was identified as 57-year-old Allan P. Burfoot of Shepherdstown, W.Va., West Virginia State Police Trooper H.D. Heil said.

Troopers responded to a home at 905 Comstock Drive at about 10 a.m. Sunday after a neighbor noticed Burfoot lying under the van, Heil said. Comstock Road is off Scrabble Road in Berkeley County.

It appears Burfoot was removing a drive shaft from the van, Heil said.

No brakes on the van were engaged and it appears a tire of the van rolled onto the left side of Burfoot and pinned him, Heil said.

Heil said Burfoot appears to have died of asphyxiation, although an investigation is continuing.

Burfoot may have been lying under the van since last Wednesday, Heil said.

Burfoot was discovered by Troopers J.D. Burkhart and Scott See, Heil said.
