BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - An 18-year-old Berkeley Springs man died Tuesday night after he was struck by a car while riding a bicycle along U.S. 522 about six miles north of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia State Police said.

Police identified the dead man as Justin McAnulty.

The accident occurred between 9 and 10 p.m. when Brian Daniel Murray, 47, of Berkeley Springs was driving a 2003 Mazda south on the highway, police said.

Murray struck McAnulty but told police he thought he had hit a deer, police said.

Murray checked the area and went home, police said.

On Wednesday at about 6:30 a.m., Murray returned to the area to see what he struck and found McAnulty's body, police said.

State police, who are investigating the case, had not determined a cause of the accident.

An accident reconstructionist is assisting in the investigation and a state police crime scene team is assisting with collection of evidence and photographs, police said.
